Consumer Protection

Metrology is a science of measurements. Trough calibration of measuring instruments, the accuracy of measurements is traceable to the National standards hence providing the traceability chain to the international measurement system.

Measurement, and goods packed by measure, has generally replaced a number of simple measures (baskets, buckets, plates etc.) as the basis of transaction for a wide range of consumer commodities and products.

Measuring instruments used in commercial transaction in the country therefore need to be controlled for accuracy. Thus verification of measuring instruments used in trade becomes a basis for fair trade and therefore the duty of government to implement.

2008 saw Rwanda Bureau of Standards commence consumer protection activities through verification of fuel dispensing pumps throughout the country, and this has been followed by the verification of weighing instruments in market place and removing inappropriate measuring instruments that are found in use on the market.
